Crisp and assertive, with cranberry and currant flavors backed by notes of graphite on the finish.

A lot of wine for the money, this Portuguese red offers concentrated blackberry and plum fruit accented with toast, spice and vanilla. Shows some grip on the finish.

Deep ruby and medium-bodied, the wine is round with red berries, plums and figs and is balanced with a smooth earthy finish.

86 Points. This is one of Portugal's big brands. Soft, easy and juicy, this has just a touch of dryness and great, fresh aftertaste.

Highly Recommended. This red blend made from castelao, trincadeira, and aragones grapes is a well-made perennial favorite, with bright cherry aromas and lush, soft cherry flavors with spicy hints and refreshing acidity balancing soft tannins. Try it with aged cheeses and grilled flank steak.

With one sip of this wine you have reached the goal you set of trying three obscure grape varieties every week. And however unfamiliar the grapes may be, the wine is essential to summer outdoor grilling. Full-bodied, robust and boldly spicy, bursting with blueberry, currant and plum fruit with a hint of something wild, this is a perfect, inexpensive wine for steaks, grilled veal chops or leg of lamb (thinking rosemary and garlic). The wine is very dry and quite earthy, with grainy, chewy tannins, moderate oak (four months in new and used barrels) and touches of lavender, licorice and potpourri in the somewhat austere finish. Now through 2009 or '11. A Great Bargain. Very Good +

85 Points. The 2004 Periquita is a ton of fun, and good value. In its exuberance, it shows ripe and lovely raspberry notes, perhaps even a hint of kirsch, along with some brightness and light tannins on the finish. It is ralatively modest in the mid-palate, and as it develops in the cellar, its mid-palate will take on a certain Burgundian feel. The very sweet fruit, not too far off candied in its youth, although whether it will calm down with age is another matter entirely.

A great refreshing white summer wine. Pale straw with greenish hues, it is lively and crisp…offers a vibrant acidity with flavors of lemon, melon and green apple. It is a wonderful aperitif wine and pairs well with seafood, salads, poultry and light dishes.

ose Maria da Fonseca Twin Vines Vinho Verde 2007 is a pale, almost clear, refreshing white wine from the Vinho Verde DOC in northwest Portugal. Low in alcohol and an all occasion pour, the wine has aromas of lemon, melon and green apple. While it is crisp in taste, it is not at all tart. Its slight effervescence feels lively on the palate with refreshing citrus fruit flavors. The spritziness comes from a small dose of carbon dioxide added right before bottling. Perfect for chicken or tuna salad, lightly smoked fish, and Emmenthal or Jarlsberg cheese, or fruit salad.

A very attractive bargain. The bubbles here are not visible but the prickle of carbonation is evident on the tongue. Crisp and dry, it's a great wine for a summer picnic or with grilled fish

85 Points. Crisp apples, touched with some sweetness, but finely clean and fresh, this is a great aperitif style of Vinho Verde, finishing with just a sparkle.

88 Points. The ripe peach flavors of this wine gain prominence with air, balancing dusty talc and a touch of CO2. It's both sweet and vibrant. A lush aperitif.
