About this whisky
Dalwhinnie sits high in the Cairngorms, beside the Drumochter Pass, where the distillery has stood since 1897. It is one of the highest working distilleries in Scotland and among the coldest, and those long, chilly winters matter: the spirit is condensed in traditional worm tubs, coils of copper pipe sitting in vats of cold water, which helps give it a rich, honeyed texture. The 15 Year Old was chosen as one of Diageo's original Classic Malts, the six whiskies picked in 1988 to represent Scotland's regions.
Bottled at 43%, it is soft and approachable: heather honey, citrus zest and a little orchard fruit on the nose, then toffee, vanilla and gentle spice over a light malty base, finishing with a warm honeyed glow and the faintest touch of smoke. It is a thoughtful gift for someone who prefers elegance over power, and a quietly impressive pour for guests new to single malt. It also makes an excellent long Highball.
